Apr 18, 2008 · The gearbox did start to wine whenever i layed off the throttle in 5th gear then it would pop out of that gear when warm, but all i done was to park up as i was in 3rd gear then it just would not come out of that gear, i know it needs a gearbox at some point but i would like to run it into the ground till then so i did hope it might only be a mounting.

Sep 15, 2003 · Some transmissions use both the P0741 and P1870. The 4L80-E transmission uses the P0741 for 3rd gear TCC slip, and P1870 for 4th gear TCC slip. Some late model 4L60-E transmissions can set a P1870 or P0741 depending on how the computer is programmed. GM uses code “P0742 TCC Stuck On” when the computer detects the TCC has not released.

If your selector rods are clear I would take the top of the box to check the forks, if it is still stuck in gear take the box out and remove the bell housing. You can then pull the 3rd 4th syncro out and inspect it. It is all straight forward spannering once you have the floor out.

I can’t feel it drop to second until I hit the gas then the rpm’s start to go up until it shifts back to 3rd and when I let off the throttle the same thing happens and the process starts all over.

Nov 28, 2007 · This just happened... I went to move the rover in 1st gear and had some hesitation. Thought it was a locked up brake. So I moved the rover forward in 1st and in reverse with the hope of freeing it up. After 3 or 4 tries the rover wont go into gear. I get a little noise when I try to go into reverse and 4th but, thats it.
So I came out of the dealership £500 down about a week ago thinking the shift solenoid change that originally brought up a p0761 iirc had fixed the issue. So 10 mins into my journey home I saw the engine light, VSC and traction light has come on again and I was stuck in 3rd gear again.

the 6l80e has a 1st gear rpm drop closer tothe 60e/65e.70e than the 80e/85e. The 80e is even a closer ratio trans than the newer 8l90e. There is quite a bit more rpm drop with the 8l90 and 6l80e transmissions than with the 4l60e trans, and its horrible on the 4l60e trans, esp with a stock torque converter.
